I am a professional Portrait Photographer. I have done a Wedding before but did not charge. I specialize in Studio Photography. I have been asked to cover a wedding and just wondering how I charge for that as it is totally different to my studio and portrait sitting. I will have an assistant on the day.
IF (big if) you are actually a pro portrait photographer then you would know what you need to and how to charge for the wedding and packages associated with same.
I wanted to know what people that are getting married should know about wedding photography.
the type of wedding photography you want. for instance most of today’s brides like to have a mixture of photo journalistic style and the traditional posed style. photo journalistic style is then the photographer takes candid shots of the various proceedings of the day as opposed to just taking posed shots. be sure to ask if your photographer does this sort of photography.
you should also ask how many photographers will be present. you need to know this in order to be able to provide vendor meals for them and also to know how well you can expect your event to be covered. most photographers have an assistant with them, but not all. the ones who are solo are always going to be less expensive, well usually.
find out about the photographer’s copywrite agreements. most photographers want you to agree to allow them to have full copy rights over the material which allows them to be able to use your photos on their web sites or in other types of advertising without having to get your permission. that is perfectly normal.
you should ask if you are going to get an edited cd, negatives or just the prints in your package. they will have various prices for different types of packages. any work they have to do in the studio to edit or refine the photos will cost you extra, but is often very well worth the money so that everyone looks their best. unfiltered or untouched photos are not always that flattering.
arm yourself with a list of the "must have" photos and have it added to your contract as an addendum so that you can be sure you get all the shots you want. for instance, if you want a shot with you and the flower girl. or with the flower girl and ring bearer, etc. list all the ones you just have to have. you will pay for each one so get them to tell you how much it is going to be to have all the ones you want and then reduce it until you get to the budget you have set aside for photos.
be sure the photographer is willing to stay until your exit. some work by the hour and if you contract them for 4 hours they will pack it up and leave at the end of 4 hours even if you and your new hubby have not yet made your grand exit, so you won’t get those shots. be sure your agreement with them includes staying until the end so you don’t miss anything.
plan on it taking between 2 months up to a year to get your photos back depending on what you order and how busy the photographer is. be sure to have a cut off time which you will allow him/her to have to get your photos to you written in the contract.

In our digital age, many believe that film photography is a difficult medium and a thing of the past. Think again.
The work flow of photographing a wedding is already a challenge, and in the eyes of some, photographing a wedding using film adds more opposition. But to this photography team, it’s actually easier than digital.
